Old Town Art Festival: San Diego
It’s that time of year again! Time to revel in the mild fall climate while enjoying the wonderful art and entertainment at this year’s Old Town Art Festival. Slated for October 6th and 7th from 10am – 6pm, this year’s festival is shaping up to be a can’t-miss event that brings together beautiful weather, international foods, wine tasting and live entertainment.
You’ll find museum quality art as you take in the history and charm of Old Town. The festival features art of all kind including contemporary art, sculpture, fine crafts, fashion and home decor.
A sampling of the artists you’ll find here include Dick Duerrstein, an oil painter that draws inspiration from the animation drawings of Chuck Jones. Hassan Atapour’s stunning photographs blend his backgrounds in both photography and engineering, while Agnes Copeland’s watercolors evoke happiness and whimsy in scenes of places, florals, and people.
You’ll also find the work of glass artist Paul Counts, the jewelry of Allan Mason, the sculpture of Cesar Naranjo, the mosaics of Sandra A. Schimmel Gold, and the ceramics of Derek Voien, among many, many others.
Flavor of Old Town
While browsing through the selection of fine art, take time to sample a bite from one of the over 30 fine restaurants in Old Town or from one of the many vendors at the show. Dine on traditional Mexican food at Cafe Coyote y Cantina, nosh on the best burger in town at Crazee Burger, or step back in time at the steakhouse and saloon the Old Town Mining Company. Or snack on traditional festival fare such as kettle corn, ice cream and tacos.
A celebrated feature of the Old Town Art Festival is the wine tasting. Hosted by Hacienda de las Rosas, tickets for the wine tasting event are available at the door and are good for six tastings. Enjoy local wine, sangria and beer in the Wine Tasting Garden while mulling over that new sculpture for your dining room table. The garden is open from 11am to 6pm both days.
The entertainment at this year’s festival can’t be beat, with a full roster of music and performances to suit every taste. On Saturday, enjoy an early-morning circus performance with the kids, and stay to dance to the grooves of the Jazz Pigs and Latin A Go Go. Sunday features the musical stylings of Mike Moran and Mario Oliveras, including a performance by the band Zzmzzy.
The festival hasn’t forgotten the little ones, with arts and crafts available for kids all day. Children’s artist Marquis Leo will conduct demonstrations for kids throughout the weekend. And those truly adventurous kids can check out the Circus Workshops, also presented throughout the weekend.
