La Jolla

La Jolla is a famous, seaside resort community, which occupies a 7-mile stretch along the coastline of the Pacific Ocean in Southern California. It is located within the northern limits of San Diego. Among all areas in San Diego, La Jolla comes with the highest home prices. The average price of homes which have four bedrooms are at $1.8 million in 2008 and $2.1 million in 2009. The area is surrounded by beaches and oceans on three sides. It is located 12 miles north of Downtown San Diego and 40 miles south of Orange County.

People love La Jolla mainly because of the mild climate. It comes with an average daily temperature of 21.4 degree Celsius. It is home to a wide range of businesses like lodging, dining, shopping, software, finance, bioengineering, medical, scientific, as well as real estate business.

There are many great schools as well. La Jolla is where you will find excellent schools like the University of California, San Diego, Salk Institute, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and the headquarters of the National University.

The Name La Jolla

Most of you are wondering as to the origins of the name “La Jolla”. Local native Americans called as the Kumeyaay, named the located as “mat kulaaxuuy”, meaning “land of holes”. The holes they are referring to are still quite uncertain. But these may pertain to the sea-level caves on the north, which are quite visible from the La Jolla Shores. The said name was replaced when the Spanish occupied the area, naming it “La Jolla”. An alternate guess for its name is the Spanish word La Joya which means “the jewel”. The said name origin is now its nickname, which is “Jewel City”. This is widely used in commercial references.

Geographical Highlights of La Jolla

La Jolla comes with a mixed geology. There are sandy beaches, as well as rocky shorelines. On Mount Soledad, one can find narrow roads with hundreds of homes overlooking the ocean. However, the most compelling highlight in La Jolla is the oceanfront. There are alternating rugged and sandy coasts, with wild seal congregations. Some of the popular beaches in the area are Windansea, Marine Street, Horse Shoes, Wipeout, Children’s Pool, La Jolla Cove, Black’s Beach, and more.

Things to Do at La Jolla

La Jolla is the location of the pristine Torrey Pines Golf Course, known to host several international events like the PGA Tour, Farmers Insurance Open and the like. On the other hand, the downtown area is where people will find many jewelry stores, boutiques, restaurants that serves the best meals, as well as hotels.

Some of the finest and most popular beachfront homes are at La Jolla Shores, La Jolla Hermosa, Hermosa Terrace, Beach Barber, Barber track and of course, Bird Rock.
