La Jolla Caves for Underground Fun!

La Jolla Community, News | 22nd Nov 2012

Out for an outdoor adventure? The best outdoor adventure any person can have is discovering the La Jolla Caves in CA. These are the seven sea caves between the La Jolla shores and the cove in California. These are the White Lady, Little Sister, Shopping Cart, Sea Surprise, Arch Cave, the Calm, and of course, the very famous Sunny Jim Cave. All of these are within the sandstone sea cliff, which is said to be 75 million years old. The Sunny Jim Cave is the only one that is accessible by land. There is a man-made tunnel entrance and is situated inside the Cave Shore, a great number of visitors come on a daily basis. For exploring the other six caves, there are several kayak tours available.  The La Jolla caves belong to the La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve.

Sunny Jim’s Cave

Since it is the highly accessible cave among all seven, it cannot be denied that it is the most popular, a crowd’s favorite. The man-made tunnel mentioned earlier has been built for more than a century ago and allows visitors to see the beauty of the cave. The admission to the cave is very cheap, but the experience people get to have is indeed priceless. The adventure starts at the Cave Shore, and visitors can climb about 145 steps to the cavern proper. Once people reach the best spot, overlooking the ocean, an indescribable chilly feeling will be felt.

The Story Behind its Name

The name of the cave is actually given by Frank Baum, the known author of the Wizard of Oz. Isn’t that interesting? Baum named the cave as such because of the opening; it resembled the cartoon mascot of the British Force Wheat Cereal popular during the 1920s.

Before it became a tourist destination, the cave was previously used to smuggle Chinese immigrants and contraband Whisky during the times when it was prohibited. This historical landmark is popular to both local and out-of-town tourists. To visit the cave, no appointments or reservations are needed. However, the hours of operation within the cave may change without prior notice because of different factors like the weather, daylight and season. It is best to call right before visiting the place.

Exploring the Other Caves

As what has been said, Sunny Jim Cave is the only one accessible via land. The other 6 wonderful caves can be reached through Kayak. There are several experienced kayak tour guides available. The kayak experience is perfect for those who would like to enjoy an unforgettable outdoor adventure in the caves of La Jolla. The scenery within the area is indeed spectacular and eye-popping, there is no doubt about that. Visiting caves is unlike any other outdoor adventure, spending time in the caves is a unique way to celebrate summer or even the weekend.
