Jerusalem Quartet in La Jolla

Closing its 46th season Revelle Chamber Music Series, La Jolla Music Society welcomes back the Jerusalem Quartet with a Romantic program featuring Schumann’s String Quartet in A Major and Schubert’s String Quartet in D Minor, the profound masterpiece also known as “Death and the Maiden.” Arrive early at 7 p.m. for a pre-concert lecture prior to this evening’s performance hosted by Dr. Nicolas Reveles: “Schumann’s Mind and Music.”

Jerusalem Quartet, hailed by The Strad as “one of the young, yet great quartets of our time,” has garnered international acclaim for its rare combination of passion and precision. The ensemble has won audiences the world over, both in concert and on their recordings for the Harmonia Mundi label. They will return to North America in October, 2014, and again in February, 2015.

The quartet performs regularly in Europe as well, with recent appearances at venues such as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Herkulessaal in Munich, London’s Wigmore Hall and the Cité de la Musique in Paris, as well as venues in cities including Brussels, Antwerp, Gent, Lucerne, Dortmund, Perugia, Genoa, Siena and Le Mans.

Jerusalem Quartet is a record three-time recipient of BBC Music Magazine’s Chamber Music Award, most recently for their CD of Mozart quartets (2012), as well as for their recordings of Haydn (2010) and Shostakovich (2007). The quartet’s recording of Schubert’s Death and the Maiden and Quartettsatz in C minor was featured as Editor’s Choice in the July 2008 edition of Gramophone, and was also awarded an ECHO Classic chamber music award in 2009. On their most recent recording, they are joined by clarinetist Sharon Kam for the Brahms clarinet quintet. Gramophone hailed the quartet’s performance of Op. 51, No. 2 on that recording, saying, “Few command Brahms’s string quartets the way the Jerusalem do here.” The quartet records exclusively for Harmonia Mundi.

In November 2007, the quartet was awarded first prize in the “most impressive performance by a (small) ensemble” category of the Netherlands’ Vereniging van Schouwburgen en Concertgebouwdirecties. In 2003, they received the first Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award, and were part of the first ever BBC New Generation Artists scheme between 1999 and 2001.

Jerusalem Quartet formed while its members were students at the Jerusalem Conservatory of Music and Dance. They quickly found a shared commitment to the music that has not only endured, but has propelled them to the highest level of performance. Ori Kam joined the group in 2011, upon the departure of founding violist Amihai Grosz.

Jerusalem Quartet last performed for La Jolla Music Society in the Revelle Chamber Series on May 2, 2009.

La Jolla Music Society carries forward a distinguished tradition reaching back to the Musical Arts Society of La Jolla founded in 1941 by Nikolai Sokoloff, former conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra.  Together with other musically-minded La Jolla residents including Ellen and Roger Revelle, Sokoloff and the Music Society commissioned twenty new works between 1949 and 1968, presenting the premières in the auditorium at La Jolla High School.

In 1968, the La Jolla Chamber Players was formally incorporated by a small group of local musicians with John Garvey conducting. Joan Brown was the new group’s first Board President.

Within three years, the group’s official name was changed to La Jolla Chamber Orchestra, which then presented a total of six concerts and recitals each year. The Board was active in all aspects of the Orchestra’s administration, from programming and publicity to fundraising and ticketing. In the Orchestra’s formative years, the only employees of the organization were orchestra members, and ticket prices for the original Sherwood Series (renamed the Revelle Series in 1998) ranged from $5.50 to $7.00 per concert. The Friends of the La Jolla Chamber Orchestra formed to coordinate volunteer participation in the group’s activities.
