Celebrate Art at the Mission Federal ArtWalk on April 25-26
Mission Federal ArtWalk, the largest fine art festival in Southern California, is a 17-block celebration in the lively neighborhood of Little Italy in San Diego. Founded by local artists, Mission Federal ArtWalk has become a showcase for established and emerging artists and the ultimate event for aficionados and casual collectors.
The Art: Stroll through the outdoor exhibition of original fine art in an array of compelling media including paintings, sculpture and photography. More than 700 artists apply for the sought after slots each year, with about half selected to participate. Exhibiting artists represent California and beyond, and some hail from as far away as Europe. These one-of-a-kind collectibles are available for purchase directly from the artist with an expected price range of $50 to over $15,000.
Featured Artists: Based on the celebratory theme of “creativity connects,” twelve featured artists were selected from over 700 applicants. These artists represent some of the most talented established and emerging artists in the region and work in mediums ranging from glass to oil paint.
Off the Wall: Four acclaimed “street artists” will showcase their talents with live painting at the festival on Saturday. These well-known graffiti-style painters Chor Boogie, Apex, Mike Bam and Codak will complete large panels before the eyes of attendees.
Fun for Families: Families are invited to bring their kids to enjoy KidsWalk, a special area at the event offering more than 15 hands-on art activities provided by regional nonprofit organizations such as children’s museums, performing art schools and art instructors.
Live Performances: For decades the festival has also celebrated San Diego’s diverse performing arts with an extensive lineup of music and dance performances. Visitors will enjoy five stages of live music, a dedicated venue for San Diego’s dance companies, terrific eateries and creative vignettes of performing and interactive entertainment.
Interactive Activities: Mission Federal ArtWalk offers several hands-on activities for guests to release the artist within.
This year, you’ll find that the festival has a different footprint than in the past. This is due to construction in Little Italy. When the construction on Date Street is complete in 2017, there will be a beautiful no-vehicle “Piazza de la Familia” in the center of Little Italy. Meanwhile, organizers of ArtWalk have created a layout that features many more artists along India Street than in previous years–a footprint both artists and art lovers will enjoy. Due to this new layout, KidsWalk is in a new location, at the corner of India and Beech Streets.
ArtWalk activities help to support the mission of ArtReach San Diego, the not for profit organization that takes high quality visual art workshops into San Diego County K-6 schools, offering free programming to schools with no resources for art education.
Mission Federal Credit Union plays an enormous part in making this event possible and helping to keep it free to the public. We thank all of our sponsors for making Mission Federal ArtWalk for making this festival possible.
Little Italy, the backdrop for the festival, is like no other district in San Diego. This vibrant neighborhood is home to art galleries, San Diego’s top dining destinations, and charmingly unique public spaces that invite you to come, linger, and enjoy. Our thanks go out to the Little Italy Association of San Diego for many years of support.
