Midnight Movies at the Del Mar Theatre

Del Mar Community | 3rd Sep 2012

Satisfy your inner teenager with a midnight movie screening at the historic Del Mar Theatre in downtown Santa Cruz.  Enjoy films from years gone by while soaking in the luxurious surroundings of this timeless movie palace.

The Del Mar Theatre opened in August 1936, and became known as one of the best, most state-of-the-art theatres in California.  In 1955, the theatre’s lobby and auditorium were damaged by the big Santa Cruz flood, but the theatre continued nonetheless.  By the 1970s the building had fallen into disrepair, and in 1999 after many years of decline the theatre closed.

In 2000, friends of the Del Mar worked to save the building, and in 2001 a grand re-opening was held.  During the event, a screening of China Clipper was held, which was the very first film ever played at the Del Mar.  It has since become somewhat of a cultural institution in Santa Cruz, with an interior that epitomizes the classic style of movie palaces at the height of Hollywood glamor.  Many visitors also feel it boasts the best popcorn around.

Midnight Movies at the Del Mar

The best way to experience the history and beauty of this movie theatre is at one of their famous midnight showings on Fridays and Saturdays.  Enjoy movies from bygone eras, and enter to win special prizes and give-aways.  Here’s a look at what’s coming soon:

On August 24th and 25th, take a ride with Starship Troopers.  Based on the Robert A. Heinlein novel of the same name, this 1997 film is about a young soldier named Johnny Rico who serves in the futuristic military unit the Mobile Infantry.  The story follows Rico’s rise in the military ranks during an interstellar war between mankind and a species of over-sized arachnids known as “the Bugs”.

On September 7th and 8th, examine mass media’s effect on our country with Oliver Stone’s Natural Born Killers.  Written by Quentin Tarantino and starring Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis, the film is about two victims of traumatic childhoods who become lovers and mass murderers and are glorified by the media.

On September 21st and 22nd, enjoy Ryan Gosling as a Hollywood stunt performer who moonlights as a getaway driver in 2011’s Drive.

On October 5th and 6th, follow the lives of two hit men, a gangster’s wife and a pair of diner bandits in Quentin Tarantino’s cult classic Pulp Fiction.  Round out the month of October on the 19th and 20th with The Shining, based on the book by Stephen King and starring Jack Nicholson.  It’s just the ticket to put you in the Halloween spirit.
