Midnight Movies at the Del Mar Theatre
Satisfy your inner teenager with a midnight movie screening at the historic Del Mar Theatre in downtown Santa Cruz. Enjoy films from years gone by while soaking in the luxurious surroundings of this timeless movie palace.
The Del Mar Theatre opened in August 1936, and became known as one of the best, most state-of-the-art theatres in California. In 1955, the theatre’s lobby and auditorium were damaged by the big Santa Cruz flood, but the theatre continued nonetheless. By the 1970s the building had fallen into disrepair, and in 1999 after many years of decline the theatre closed.
In 2000, friends of the Del Mar worked to save the building, and in 2001 a grand re-opening was held. During the event, a screening of China Clipper was held, which was the very first film ever played at the Del Mar. It has since become somewhat of a cultural institution in Santa Cruz, with an interior that epitomizes the classic style of movie palaces at the height of Hollywood glamor. Many visitors also feel it boasts the best popcorn around.
