About Whisknladle

Whisknladle is in La Jolla and has hours that are wide open, which means there’s a very good chance of getting into this restaurant in the near future. It’s an eclectic mix of food that big crowds will enjoy and the noise level is high enough that you can stop by to party with friends and not worry if you go overboard on the loud laughs. Whisknladle is great for stopping by for drinks and appetizers or doing a full-on dinner with that special someone. Most of the food is sourced locally and abides by the farm-to-table trend that’s taking over moderately-priced to high end restaurants throughout the United States.

What to Order

Salads seem to be a big hit at Whisknladle. While they aren’t anything out of the ordinary, the fresh ingredients and subtle twists to classics allow diners to feel like they’re stepping out of their culinary comfort zone. The farm-to-table experience allows the servers to give you some background on the food, but because Whisknladle was on the forefront of this trend, they aren’t there to feed you an ornate story about the cow you’re about to consume. The restaurant has a sophisticated feel to it, but it isn’t pretentious or overtly fancy that most people will feel out of place. With the salads, you can expect crunchy Romaine or arugula and fresh cheeses with just the right amount of tartness or creaminess – depending on what salad you go with.
The flatbreads are known to be delicious at Whisknladle, served at both brunch and lunch, this is one of the larger portions on the menu. Some restaurant goers complain of the portions at Whisknladle, but keep in mind a lot of the food is heavy, rich food. Would you really want a ton of it (don’t answer that)? The fried chicken is crisp, but the batter isn’t too heavy, nor does it mask the taste of the succulent chicken. It’s served with a crisp cabbage slaw that makes it feel like a grandiose experience at a backyard party. The veal marrow is also a winner and smooth enough to spread over the garlic bread that is served with it. The burger is topped with caramelized onions, gruyere, bacon and a fried egg. The fish is local and served with broccoli and a lobster reduction that makes it feel like a decadent meal.
For dessert, finish things off with one of the homemade ice creams on the menu. The dessert portions are also small, but well worth trying if you want something to wrap up dinner. Don’t forget about the unique drink menu either. The white sangria isn’t always available (holidays and weekends are safe bets), but if it’s there when you are, do yourself a favor and order a glass. The light flavor is perfect for the delicious, indulgent entrees like spaghetti, hanger steak and pork loin.

How Much?

Prices for brunch range from $9-$16, while dinner tops out at just under $30. These are moderate prices for a restaurant in the area and the quality of food and service you’ll receive is second to none. Considering the establishment focuses on local ingredients, you may expect even higher prices, but it is well worth the money to visit Whisknladle.
