La Jolla Music Society SummerFest 2012
During the month of August, the La Jolla Music Society is once again bringing you the nationally acclaimed SummerFest! SummerFest is one of the premiere chamber music festivals in the country, featuring over 70 world class artists and ensembles performing concerts all through the month. If you love live music, this is one event you don’t want to miss.
Over 650 artists and ensembles have performed at SummerFest since its inception in 1986. It has drawn nearly a quarter of a million audience members in that time and the concerts have been broadcast over the airwaves nationwide.
SummerFest kicks off on Tuesday, July 31st at 7:30pm with the annual free outdoor concert. You can picnic and enjoy live music on the lawn of Scripps Park – just be sure to get there early to secure your spot! This concert features SummerFest Music Director, Cho-Liang Lin with a variety of SummerFest artists as well as special guests the San Diego Youth Symphony’s International Youth Symphony.
A highlight of this year’s SummerFest is “An Evening with Branford Marsalis”, scheduled for Wed, August 8th at 7:30pm at the MCASD Sherwood Auditorium. The program includes a selection of jazz works performed by Marsalis, Martin Beaver, Clive Greensmith, Jeffrey Kahane, Paul Neubauer, Eric Revis and Arianna Warsaw-Fan.
The SummerFest White Nights Gala will take place on Saturday, August 11th. This black-tie fundraiser benefits the education, outreach and artistic programs of the La Jolla Music Society.
SummerFest will conclude on Friday, August 24th with the SummerFest Finale, where program highlights include performances of music by Beethoven, Rossini, Maurer, and Mendelssohn. Artists featured will include Kent Nagano, Michelle Kim, Mari Kodama, Cho-Liang Lin, Philippe Quint, Andrew Wan and the SummerFest Chamber Orchestra.
SummerFest Coaching Workshops
Every year, SummerFest invites many conservatory students to participate in an intensive series of master classes. These classes are taught by senior artists from the SummerFest roster. The students are in residence for the entire festival and participate in three weeks of classes. This culminates in a public performance during the festival. The training they receive in this intensive atmosphere contributes greatly to their growth as the next generation of musicians.
SummerFest performers will also coach young local musicians from the San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory. The La Jolla Music Society has an active partnership with the symphony to support aspiring young musicians in the San Diego area.
SummerFest Open Rehearsals
Get the rare opportunity to view the rehearsal process that happens before the audiences arrive by attending one of six Open Rehearsals. These are real, working rehearsals and no entry will be allowed once they have begun. Each rehearsal will be introduced by LJMS Artistic Administrator Leah Rosenthal.
