La Jolla – Home to Polar Bear Plunge
If you live in La Jolla and are looking for a way to add a bit of excitement to your new year, you may want to consider the 2012 Polar Bear Plunge in La Jolla Shores. Probablythe most “refreshing” way to start off the new year, several hundred courageous swimmers and onlookers will leave their warm La Jolla homes and journey to Kellogg Park to witness this incredible and outrageous event, sponsored by the La Jolla Cove Swim Club.
Swimmers can swim up to 2 miles from shore, although beginners are encouraged to limit their swim at first. A kayak support crew and lifeguard will be available to help any swimmers in need. Last year’s event recorded air temperatures of forty-five degrees and water temperatures of fifty seven degrees, so be sure to bring warm clothes to wear after the swim and you may consider wearing a wet suit while in the water.
An after plunge party will include food and beverages to warm your belly with a hot chili potluck feast, Starbuck’s coffee, cocoa and apple cider. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own hot dish to share at this community event, as well. To find out more or view pictures from previous years, please click here.
