Grunion Approach Near Your La Jolla Home
The San Diego coastline, particularly the shore near your La Jolla home, has plenty to offer in adventure and family fun in the coming months. Beginning in April, families who live in La Jolla can join in grunion runs in the evenings and enjoy the tide pools and whale watching (through April 15th) during the day.
A trip to the tide pools in the springtime means tides are lower, allowing view of hidden areas full of marine life, from sea stars to hermit crabs, sea anemones and other creatures specific to La Jolla. To find out more on how to explore these fragile habitats safely and learn to identify those curious tide pool creatures, you can visit the Birch Aquarium and take advantage of their special offer for San Diego residents. In celebration of their 20th anniversary, they will be offering residents half-off admission on the 20th of each month through September! Click here to find out more.
If you are eager to understand beach nightlife in La Jolla, the Birch Aquarium will be hosting escorted grunion runs along La Jolla Coastal Reserve beginning in April! Grunion are small, silvery fish that come out in droves during spring and summer nights, often after high tide. Bring your flashlight and dress warmly and be sure to include the teenagers and children (ages 6+) on this event! Escorted runs will occur after 10:30 p.m. in the evenings of April 8th and 23rd, May 7th and 22nd, and June 6th and cost $10/12 for adults. You must make reservations by calling 858-534-7336.
