Del Mar is a small town along the coast in the northern portion of San Diego County, California.  The name means “the Sea” in Spanish and the town occupies a choice stretch of the Pacific Coast with bluffs and rolling hills abutting broad sandy beaches and rocky coves.  The Del Mar Fairgrounds has a racetrack where horses are raced during the summer season.  The town has long been known for affluence and elegance.

The city traces its origins back to 1885 when Colonel Jacob Taylor purchased 338 acres of land from Enoch Talbert with the aim of constructing a luxury resort where well to do guests could enjoy a seaside stay.  The cost was $1,000.

The weather in Del Mar is considered to be one of the mildest and most equitable in the world.  As far back as the 1890’s, families enjoyed camping in tents along the beach in summer.  The climate is classified as sub tropical, and frosts are extremely rare.  Daytime highs seldom fall below 60 or rise above 85.  It is one of the very few spots where Torrey Pines grow.

Taylor managed to design and build the town called Del Mar which was centered around Casa Del Mar, his resort hotel which stood on what now is 11th St.  The small town featured a dance pavilion and a bathing pool that extended out into the ocean.  A train station provided access to guests.
