Highly Valued Section of San Diego Coast

Del Mar is a small town along the coast in the northern portion of San Diego County, California.  The name means “the Sea” in Spanish and the town occupies a choice stretch of the Pacific Coast with bluffs and rolling hills abutting broad sandy beaches and rocky coves.  The Del Mar Fairgrounds has a racetrack where horses are raced during the summer season.  The town has long been known for affluence and elegance.

The city traces its origins back to 1885 when Colonel Jacob Taylor purchased 338 acres of land from Enoch Talbert with the aim of constructing a luxury resort where well to do guests could enjoy a seaside stay.  The cost was $1,000.

The weather in Del Mar is considered to be one of the mildest and most equitable in the world.  As far back as the 1890’s, families enjoyed camping in tents along the beach in summer.  The climate is classified as sub tropical, and frosts are extremely rare.  Daytime highs seldom fall below 60 or rise above 85.  It is one of the very few spots where Torrey Pines grow.

Taylor managed to design and build the town called Del Mar which was centered around Casa Del Mar, his resort hotel which stood on what now is 11th St.  The small town featured a dance pavilion and a bathing pool that extended out into the ocean.  A train station provided access to guests.

Luxury a Lifestyle in Del Mar

The city today covers 1.7 square miles and contains 4160 residents making for a low population density of about 2,300 people per square mile.  Lots here tend to be generously sized, and many people here keep horses.  The racetrack attracts a string of thoroughbreds every summer, and they are sometimes exercised along the beaches that border the race track.

Inhabitants tend to have higher than average incomes and education levels.  Median household income here is over $120,000 with median family income of over $130,000.  Median income for males is $81,250 and $70,069 for women.

In addition to the horse racing, the Del Mar Fairgrounds also host three antique shows ever year.  Torrey Pines High School is listed as one of the 100 Best High Schools in the Nation according to a survey by Newsweek.

The first store in Del Mar was owned by Henry Gottisburren who established the business in 1884.  Restaurants and resorts provide the bulk of the jobs in town today.  Many of the residents of Del Mar now commute to work in San Diego.  A large number of residents are professionals with advanced college degrees.

Del Mar is also home to many retirees and well heeled home owners who have homes elsewhere as well.

Del Mar has long attracted the wealthy along with the famous.  Desi Arnez had a house near the race track.  He spent much time here after his divorce from Lucille Ball.  Burt Bacharach also had a house close by.  Del Mar is also home to numerous sports stars.
